My grandfather’s funeral was beautiful. The pastor did a wonderful job…I really enjoyed what he had to say. And my grandfather was a WWII veteran, so there was a color guard and a bugler there. His casket was covered with a huge American flag, which was presented to my family as part of the ceremony. I don’t think there was a single dry eye there when taps was played. It’s so cool that even so many decades after his military service has ended, everything he did is still appreciated.
Perhaps the best party of the whole day…and it really was a surprisingly good day…was seeing my dad and his four brothers sit around and reminisce. It’s so rare that they are all in the same place. In fact, I can’t remember the last time it happened. They were telling all these stories from when they were growing up that I had never heard before. So great.
I’m still going to miss my paw paw, of course, but there is so much comfort in knowing that he was a believer and that I will see him again someday.

My grandfather passed away yesterday around 5:45 PM. He went in his sleep and was not suffering.
Just letting you know.

My paternal grandfather smoked for most of his life and has had emphysema for a long time. He’s been on oxygen 24/7 for the past few years and has been continually deteriorating, so the past few days weren’t exactly a surprise. On Tuesday, my grandfather had a lung collapse and was rushed to the hospital. At this point he’s resting comfortably with a small dose of morphine in his system, but the doctors are sure he’s in his last days or hours. I’m doing remarkably well, probably because he’s been sick for a long time and I’m not terribly surprised. I’m sad because I know he’s not going to be around anymore and I will miss him, but I also know that he won’t have to suffer anymore, and that gives me some peace.
Please keep my family in your prayers.

I’m pretty sure the first of the year is supposed to be a motivator to get things done, to better oneself, etc. I, on the other hand, have had the laziest January on record. The one thing I wanted to do was workout regularly, and I have yet to make it to the Y this year.
On that note, if anyone would like to help me get motivated by joining me at the Y sometime, I have several free day passes…
