hot time in the old town October 11, 2007

In what now seems to be an annual occurrence in the Cary/Apex area (remember last year’s giant chemical fire that required the evacuation of over 10,000 people in Apex?), yesterday we had another towering inferno in our little suburban paradise. Apparently, the road construction crew was drilling and hit a gas line, cause a continuous giant fireball in one of Cary’s busiest intersections (Tryon and Kildaire Farm). My mom’s office building just happens to be in that intersection (it’s the 2-story rectangular building you can sometimes see diagonally across the intersection in the video), so she saw all the action first hand. In fact, a lady who works for another business in her building was driving through the intersection at the time and happened to throw a cigarette out the window at pretty much the same time as the fireball was ignited. For a moment she actually thought she caused the explosion. Of course, she didn’t, but I bet she thinks twice the next time she tosses out a cigarette butt.

I do think it’s kind of funny that last year’s explosion was almost exactly a year ago (Oct. 5, 2006). Makes me wonder what’s going to happen next fall…

Oh yeah…and no one was hurt.

Thomas and I are both home sick today. That wasn’t the original plan. Thomas went in to work this morning, but came home early. I was on my way to lessons when my coolant light came on. I decided that was a sign that I should stay home today and proceeded to cancel all my lessons for the day. I really don’t need to infect my students anyway. At least we can both get some rest today.

best birthday present ever! August 30, 2007

Filed under: General — Allea @ 10:12 am

Granted my birthday was back in April, but yesterday I got the greatest birthday present ever from my sweet husband. Sad thing is, I think probably only three of you (that I can think of) will actually appreciate the sheer greatness of this gift. Thomas bought me Rubin and Ed on DVD (so I no longer have to watch my bootleg VHS that is slightly damaged and has horrible sound) AND a signed copy of the script! I am now officially the biggest geek ever. Yes, I realize that few of you have even heard of Rubin and Ed. If you want to watch it, tell me, since I now can watch it any time I want without having to worry about wearing out the tape. But I warn you…it’s going to be one of the weirdest movies you’ve ever seen, and you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it.

Needless to say, I love it!!!

My website has FINALLY been resurrected! I’ll try to make an actual post tomorrow. In the meantime, thanks to Thomas for finding the problem and fixing it.

I’ve decided I want a maid. Not full time though. Just to come once and get everything completely spotless. Then I think I could maintain it. But the daunting task of getting the house completely clean and in order is a bit overwhelming. I know what needs to be done, but have no idea where to start. I’m going to try my best to get a lot done tonight…just one room at a time.

Today I’m so tired. We, or at least I, try so hard to get to bed early, but there’s always so much to do. I’m just exhausted. I keep thinking things are going to calm down, but they never quite seem to. I guess I am less busy than I was a month ago. I should be thankful for that.

Alrighty…time to finish cleaning the kitchen. Wish me luck!

Warning: There’s no telling what’s going to be written about today, and what is will probably be annoyingly random.

Had lunch with Sara today. Hadn’t seen her since my wedding. It was awesome.

Bought tickets to see Chess with Heather. Hope the actual story is as good as the music. Either way, I can’t wait to see Heather.

Helping with music for VBS this week. Might be helping the kids worship leader make a CD of kids songs. Pretty excited about that.

SO GLAD we’re finally having Bible study again tonight. It’s been three weeks and I’ve been having major withdrawals. Plus, we’re starting to talk about finances tonight…a very appropriate topic for newlyweds.

Quick rant: Why do places insist on using Ticketmaster as the only means of acquiring tickets to their events? What a rip off! Why should anyone have to pay $2.50 to print off their own tickets at home? And what the #%!(^*#%# is a convenience charge? I didn’t think it was very convenient. Ticketmaster should die.

I need sleep. And chocolate. Hmmmm……

Anyone want to go swimming?

Wishing everyone a happy Independence Day!

And in other pretty much unrelated news…

It has recently been brought to my attention (thanks to Google Analytics) that the vast majority of the visitors to this site are still using Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, this site doesn’t display properly in IE (thank you Microsoft for your unwillingness to follow standards). So if you want to see what my site (and countless others) are actually supposed to look like, you should visit http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and download Firefox (for free). You’ll thank me…or at least you won’t think I don’t know how to make a working website anymore.

free time June 28, 2007

Filed under: General — Allea @ 3:40 pm

Lessons have been incredibly slow this week and I’ve had all this crazy free time on my hands during the day. The sad thing is I don’t feel that I’ve accomplished much, if anything. I need to empty the dishwasher. I have a mountain of laundry to do. I need to do my reading for the day. I need to call the health insurance guy back again (long and not fun story).

Wedding number…um…let me count…5 of the year is this Saturday, and I’m a bridesmaid. A bridesmaid who will be wearing a strapless dress on Saturday evening. I have a weird tan line on my upper back from way back in May…possibly even April…so I thought I’d even things out with some fake tan spray. The results weren’t terrible, all things considered, since I didn’t wake up orange this morning. I do, however, have a clearly defined line between my ankles and my feet, and the tan line I was trying to blend in on my back is somehow still completely visible. But at least I don’t look like an over-sized oompa loompa.

Looking forward to July. Looking forward to a month with almost no plans. Looking forward to actually having time to spend with my husband and going out on a couple of dates. Looking forward to sleeping in on Saturdays.

It may actually feel like summer then.

still giddy June 27, 2007

I was fully intending on writing a post with a little more substance today, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’ve just been so silly and happy this week, and for no particular reason. This week has actually been incredibly busy and I’ve been dealing with a few hard things, but I’m still so happy. Not complaining…don’t worry.

What a wonderful weekend! The Harvest Crusade really reminded me of what a powerful, merciful, and loving God I serve. Thousands saved…how amazing!

And to my friends…you are awesome! I can’t imagine a better group to spend the weekend with. Thank you for your help and your friendship.

And finally, to my sweet husband…I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.

Sigh…perhaps a post with a little more substance next time. Today I’m just really happy.
